Howdy All,
Woke up Saturday morning 1/28/06 and headed out to Percy Priest to fish a little KY Spot tournament with a friend, Eric McGaha. It was a relatively nice day for January. Air temps 50 in the morning warming up to little over 60 and sunny the whole day. Winds were 20 to 25mph which made it a little difficult to fish some areas. We fished 3 areas of the lake, West Ford of Stones river, Stewarts creek and the damn area. The lake is up 5ft or more above summer pool and dropping the water quickly. Middle part of the lake is chocolate mudd with 48 water temps. Stones river has about 3ft visibility and heavy current, water temps 49 degrees. We managed 1 keeper fish up the river. 3lbs lm caught on a flipping tube under a cyphres tree and 1 dink on a rattle trap. Which leads me into, You know some days you have it and some, well you don't. My day was a "don't have it" type of day. To sum it up I caught 3 plastic bags, 4 leaves, 1 rock and lost 4 jigs, 2 cranks and 1 entry fee. Oh well it is all part of fishing. Anyhow we left Stones river and stopped at the Smyrna pump station and saw something I had never seen before. Water temps 45 degrees, slack water and BASS, yes BASS busting shad on top of the water. I know they were bass because we saw 3 or 4 3-4lbers right next to the boat
, could have netted them. We threw everything at them and could not even muster a smell at our baits. I have never seen fish come up like that in that cold of water. That will be put on the shelf for future use. We then shot up into Stewarts creek and found some 3ft clarity and 51 degree water. We managed a dink or two on bandit 200's in a spring crawl pattern. We finished the day up fishing deep drops down near the damn. We had much the same luck their was we did everywhere else, 0. Winning weight was a 3lb smallie and 2 13" ky spots. At least I know it was tough on everyone and just not us. Either way i am not happy about it. Chalk it up to a learning experience is about the best advice I keep giving myself. Come on Summer!
