I got a call from a friend that was trying to find a quick partner for one of his buddies for the Thursday nighter out of Old Hickory. It was short notice but OK.   I showed up at 6:30 tournament start time due to reasons I won't get into but it was already off to a bad start.   We shot up river to Cedar Creek to fish a point and some milfoil.  My 3rd cast with a Secret Weapons Spinnerbait yielded a 13" LM.  I was throwing a double willow leave with one gold blade and one silver blade. My skirt was blue with the tips dipped in chartrues.   We moved around the point and I caught another short fish. I would guess I caught 15 fish on the Secret Weapon Spinnerbait, www.secretweaponlures.com   We fished about about 2 hrs on that stretch of bank and I caught 9 or 10 13.5 to 13.875" fish.  fun to catch but still too short to keep.  It was fairly dark now and I picked up my trusty Bitsy Bug and 1st cast produced a solid 2.5lber.  We fished another hour with nothing to show.  We quickly shot 20 minutes up toward the dam on a spot that I have caught some big fish on.  About my 5th cast or so I caught a dink and then another.  Finally I felt a thump I knew was a big fish.  I set the hook and the fight was on.  We were fishing under a security light next to a dock that had some fairly deep water around it .  I got her up to the boat and my heart sunk, the line snapped.  We guessed she would have gone 6 or 7 pounds.  Dejected I just retied and started casting.  We caught one more sold fish and headed to weigh-in.  We had 2 fish for 5lbs and just out of the money.  Needless to say it was tough on all.  4 fish for 9lbs won the tournament.  3.5 lbs was big fish.  So that one fish cost us money, probably 1st place, and big bass money.  Oh well that is the breaks, better luck next time.
Time: 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm.
Water Temps 81 degrees
Air Temps 80 degrees
Water Color - Stained up river to 2ft toward the dam.

What pound line were you using on your bitsy bug? I am guessing 14lb...
Do you ever upsize your line at night? I would think fish would be less line shy at night.

On the other hand, in our clear MN lakes, I hardly ever fish a jig on less than 20lb.

      Better Luck Next Time!

I usually do not change my line size. Our water has enough color I dont worry about it much. With flourocarbon fish dont spook away during the day much anyway. I fish at night much the same, just shallower and slower. I use 14lb flourocarbon for most everything except cranks and spinnerbaits. If I am fishing Dale Hollow or Center Hill I will downsize to 8 or 10 lb line.
