I woke up Sunday morning around 7 a.m. and man was it cold. I had to thaw out my dog Macy's water bowl. She was like "uhh Dude give me some of that hot coffee". Anyhow I milled about the house all morning, cleaned the garageand did a few things I had been ignoring. Around noon I decided to go fish. By then it had warmed to a balmy 43 degrees with a stiff breeze out of the north, wind chill 39 dgrees and dark cloudy skies. Crazy you think? YA I thought so too. I wanted to head out to my favorite smallie hole on J. Percy Priest but I knew the spot would be wind blown. I decided to head to more protected areas from the wind. The water temps were right at 53 degrees and visibility was about 14" or so. I tied on a orange rattle trap and started casting shallow to deep. Nothing! I changed over to one of my favorite jigs, the Snootie Jig in black. Itied on a 3/16 oz and quickly had a few dinks off a point that was wind protected on one side and very windy on the other side. I noticed on the slack water side that the wind had created a good current. I tied on a 3/8 oz Snootie Jig with a Zoom Small chunk trailer. Was that the ticket! They would just pound the heck out of that jig. No love taps, no nibbles, just a hard whack and off they would run to deeper water. Most of the time I would get bit in about 5ft of water. They trick to it was to drag the jig with the current and try to hit a rock, stump or whatever was on the bottom. When it did hit it, I let it stop for a few seconds and then quickly pop it hard off the cover and on the way back down they would whack it hard. This even worked on a tube and rattle trap. You had to hit some cover with your lure before you got bit. I started around 1pm and finished around 3:30. I caught a total of 16 bass with 3 of them meauring 16" to 17". I don't think that is too bad for a cold November day.
I have some time off this week, Thursday thru Sunday and plan to fish Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
