This past Saturday Ron and I participated in the Annual Easter Seals fishing derby for the campers. I think this year was one of the wettest times I have ever fish in. It rained from the time I awoke at 4a.m. to about 1 p.m.  I am not just talking a small shower, it flat out poured down buckets of water. I will bet the water rose over 1ft in just a few hours. Current, oh it was every where, even in the backs of the creeks.
I got lucky and drew Chelsea the same camper I had last year. She again was fantastic to fish with.  She has such a wonderful out look on life. Chelsea is from Dickson Tennessee and goes to Dickson High School and is a Junior this year and expects to graduate next year. I would have a picture but as I said it was pouring buckets of rain. Also fishing with us was Blair a Belmont University Student.  Blair was great and not to mention she out fished Ron.  We only fished for about 2 hours and due to some lightning in the area I decided to pull off the lake for safety reasons.  In the 2 hours we did managed to catch 30 blue gills, a shell cracker and one drum, which I think it won Chelsea big fish of the tournament.  Sorry Chelsea it was not the 48 pounds you were expecting like last year but it was still a blast to fish with you again.  Next year we will do better.
During the lunch Ron and I met a fine young man and his mother from Chattanooga.  Forgive me but I am so terrible at names, I can't remember.  Anyhow Ron and I talk with him and his mother for nearly 2 hours. This Easter Seals Camp has been so good for him.  He has elevated himself though Easter Seals and is now involved in 4-H, his high school which he is a very good student and he has a huge appetite for fishing.  As we talked I could tell this kid fished a lot and knew his stuff.  He did a good job explaining technique and why he uses the lures he uses.  He also has a 7.5lb largemouth bass to his credit.  I know a lot of grown men that can't say that.  After the rain let up I walked him down to check out the boat. I went thru all the electronics, motors, tackle, All Pro Rods and reels and explained everything I could.  He just soaked it all up.  I also went thru my tackle boxes and gathered up I would guess at least $50 to $75 worth of tackle, from jigs, worms, tubes, Secret Weapon Spinnerbaits, Cranks, finesse worms, shakey heads and  some Cajun Red fishing line for him to take home.  This kid smile was so wide, he was grinning from ear to ear.  This kid and his mother were wonderful people and I can't wait to see them again next year.

Please find the time and participate in an event like this in year area.  I think you will enjoy it and the kids will remember it for a life time. You just might also.
